Dorchester is the county town of Dorset. An historic market town, Dorchester lies on the banks of the River Frome. Dorchester is noted as being home and inspiration to the author Thomas Hardy, whose novels Tess of the d'Urbervilles and The Mayor of Casterbridge were both based on the town.

RAF Brandy Bay – 1941 A Radar station was built on the ridge above Egliston Gwyle. The RAF requisitioned Tyneham House as an administration centre for the radar station and built a camp in Tyneham Great Wood. The coast from St Alban's Head to Durlston Head, with Isle of Portland to Studland Cliffs, forms a single unit of cliffed coastline some 40 km in length. They are formed of hard limestones, with chalk at the eastern end, interspersed with slumped sections of soft cliff of sand and clays.
