Test shot - waited till midday to photograph both front and back. Surrounded by tall pine trees which can cast long shadows over the garden. Met office yet again gave mis-leading weather report, sometimes you have to go on gut feeling.

St. Mary’s was built in 1868, partly from stones salvaged from the (now redundant) 15th century church at the east end of the village and serves the villages of Compton Abbas and Twyford.

Met Office said " Sunny Day!", when I arrived, it clouded over and rained! :-( waited a couple of hours and it still rained!. Photoshop to the rescue. This is a test shot, the one used is slightly lower (blocking out the rear house, as Estate Agents don't like other buildings in the shot).

This tiny chapel, built of flint and stone, with a tiny weatherboarded bell turret, has barely been altered since it was built in Norman times.
It is hard to believe that, less than 100 years ago, the church was 'given over to donkeys, dogs, pigs and fowls' of the neighbouring farm. The church escaped total ruin in 1931 only when The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings sold a collection of Thomas Hardy manuscripts to pay for repairs.

During the First World War Mills Bombs were produced here in vast quantities. After the Gasper dam burst upriver in the summer of 1917, much of the machinery was washed from the factory and it took a number of years for industry to re-start on the site.

The Rufus Stone has to be one of the strongest reminders of the origins of the New Forest. The iron-clad stone marks the (alleged) spot where King William II was fatally wounded with an arrow, during a royal hunting outing in the Forest, in the year 1100AD.
