Christmas 1943 - Notice left on the Church read -
Please treat the church and houses with care; we have given up our homes where many of us lived for generations to help win the war to keep men free. We shall return one day and thank you for treating the village kindly.

Shillingstone Railway Project Dorset. HDR
Shillingstone Station was built by the Dorset Central Railway and opened on Monday 31st August 1863. Closed on Sunday 6th March 1966, it is now the last surviving station built by that railway company and it is therefore of great importance, both historically and architecturally, that these remarkable buildings are preserved. www.shillingstone.addr.com/about_the_station.htm

Great Hinton
Via Flickr:
St John the Evangelist Hinton Hartell Dorset.
Hinton means ‘Monk’s farm’ from Old English ‘hiwan’ and ‘tun’, due to links between the monastery at Wimborne and the parish. Martell is a manorial addition from a French family, Lords of the Manor here after the 1086 Domesday Survey at which time the King held ‘Hinetone’. Later the parish came to be known as Hinton Magna (Latin) or Great Hinton (English), to distinguish it form neighbouring Hinton Parva or Little Hinton.

Dorset Churches, a set on Flickr.

I love taking photographs of Church’s. The Church is the main focal point of any village, Town or City. Every Church has its own character and look, some with towers and some without. Some are run down and turned into homes or even Tesco mini markets!

Church with no name!
Via Flickr:
The Church (no dedication), Whitcombe Dorset.
Whitcombe Church is redundant: stripped of its furniture including the pews, although it retains the pulpit from which William Barnes preached his first and his last sermons, it is unlikely ever again to hear voices raised in songs of praise.

St John The Baptist Bere Regis Dorset.
The magnificent nave roof of about 1485 is quite unique for this part of the Dorset. It is generally considered to have been the gift of Cardinal Morton, which seems likely enough as the roof bears his coat of arms and other symbols associated with him. The spandrils are filled with vertical barred tracery and include pseudo hammer beam projections, carved into full length human figures representing the twelve apostles.

St Nicholas
Via Flickr:
St Nicholas WinterborneClenston Dorset.
This is an exceptionally attractive Victorian estate church that sits by itself away from the hamlet that it serves. It was rebuilt in 1840 by Lewis Vulliamy, who also designed the Union Workhouse at Sturminster Newton (1838), in banded flint and stone. Inside is relatively simple although the diminutive chancel has a painted ceiling and altar rails on three sides.
